Current Update
He seems to be doing really well with his motor and developmental skills. He loves to watch things outside like birds. He does a great job at following them with his eyes. He’s a pretty smart kid! Elias is a huge fan of himself and he loves looking in the mirror. When we first got him he couldn’t sit up and he could barely roll over back to front. When he did roll over he wouldn’t be able to lift up his neck at all (while lying on his tummy) and he would get frustrated and start crying very easily. Over the last 2 weeks he has learned how to roll over both ways, can completely hold up his neck while on his tummy, and he can sit up until he gets distracted by something and leans for it.
HH does a great job at caring for the children under the circumstances. After seeing how well Elias is doing and how quickly he is advancing since being with us I am even more convinced that being a part of a family is the best situation regardless of how wonderful the facility. Two weeks of 2 on 1 attention and sometimes 6 on 1 depending on the number of visitors has been wonderful for our sweet little boy (and us too)!
At that Dr.’s we found out he weighs 19.7 lbs and is 27.5 inches long. I don’t remember his head circumference but I do remember it was in the 95th percentile. We have to see a specialist about his head shape and the Dr. thinks he is a candidate for a “football helmet.” Poor baby. We are also going to see a chiropractor about his neck as he chooses to only move it one direction and has very limited mobility in the other direction. Have I told you how much I loathe those stupid bouncy seats??? They foster many bad habits.
Right now we are at my parent’s house watching my two teenage brothers. Elias has been really great at being flexible under the circumstances. As long as he is getting some love and attention he doesn’t care where he is. Jake and Alex are doing really well with him. They love to scream, “Autumn, your baby is crying” whenever Elias is waking from a nap or getting his diaper changed. As if I can’t hear the ear piercing shrills when I am leaning over him changing a diaper. They seem to think they are being helpful though. Alex refers to Elias as his “friend.” When he wakes up or comes downstairs he says, “Where is my friend? There’s my friend.” It’s sweet. They also have teenage boy questions. As Elias is sleeping on my chest, Alex (15) asks me if it is lame to have a baby fall asleep on me. What kind of question is that? His reasoning was that I have to be quiet and can’t really move. It also is hot and he drools on me. I assured him it wasn’t lame and despite all his very good points I love it!
Elias’ current nicknames are drool monster, buddy, mr. bouncy, sweet pea, and lover boy.
Ethiopia Day 3 "Gotcha Day" (Sunday)
When I woke up I headed downstairs to call Emily and tell her to come on over. She and the boys were eating breakfast and then they planned on coming over. I ran upstairs and made Brian get up. Then I started unpacking and organizing everything as if 8 and 10 year old boys care what a hotel room looks like. Once we were dressed and ready we went downstairs to wait for them. Although I had hardly had anything to drink the past 48 hours I found myself having to pee every 10 minutes. It must have been the excitement. Of course this meant when Emily and the boys arrived I was in the bathroom and could hear Brian yelling through the lobby, “Autumn, they’re here!” I hurried out and had my first glimpse of Almeu and Israel. They were very shy but let me hug them.
Once they saw the breakfast buffet at the Union they were hungry again so we all sat down and ate. I kept telling them how excited we were to meet them. Anything we said was met with shy grins and eyes cast downward.

We hung out with our three siblings for the next few hours. We gave them presents from us and ones Mom and Dad had sent. We also gave them Pop Rocks. It was hysterical. Israel kept sticking out his tongue and drooling all over the place. We have it on video but Brian accidentally left the video camera charger at the Union and the one we have at home apparently needs that same cord so until we go shopping the videos will have to wait. When we checked in the night before we had received our schedule and found out Almaz would be there to take us to HH at 2pm.
Once the time was getting closer Emily took the boys back to the house and came back to the Union so she could take pictures and video for us. We headed downstairs to wait the last 15 minutes. At this point I became nervous.
For the first time in this whole experience I had butterflies in the stomach and was filled to the brim with anticipation. We all sat there staring at the clock and wondering how late Almaz was going to be. Ethiopian time is a lot like Hawaii time. Almaz got there and dropped a bomb. Instead of doing paperwork the next morning like our schedule said she wanted to do it right then. She thought it would take about a ½ hour. At this point it was 2:15 and I was barely keeping a lid on my excitement. We sat and did paperwork, albeit reluctantly.
Finally we headed on THE WALK to Hannah’s Hope.

I had seen pictures but was overcome once again with the feeling of relief and unbelief that it was finally our turn. The walk was very short. We turned a corner and the first gate we saw said All God’s Children. My eyes started to well up just knowing Elias was inside. When we first walked in we had the pleasure of watching the other families meet their children as they were all older. It was a moment filled with pure joy and I am so blessed to have been able to witness such beautiful meetings. Almaz kept wanting to hurry us along and somewhat reluctantly we stopped watching their reunions and went to experience ours. We walked around a building and then climbed up back stairs. As we entered in the door I could hear a baby screaming. We walked down a short hallway and I saw Almaz pause. It was Elias. And he was the child who was screaming. She picked him up and I was upset. I didn’t care that he was screaming it was my turn. She kept saying she wanted to calm him down first and I kept smiling and saying that was fine while secretly wanting to snatch him from her arms. Eventually she let me hold him although he never calmed down. He would keep crying and she would take him again.
We walked upstairs where Almaz instructed me to pick him up in his bouncy seat and carry him down windy stairs. You’re kidding right? I just got my son and now I am going to drop all 19 pounds of him as I fall down stairs?
It certainly wasn’t the most graceful thing but we made it. We watched him sleep for about 45 minutes. He looked so peaceful and content.

During that time we played with other babies and took pictures of Elias. When he woke up Daddy was sitting on the couch watching him and he woke up smiling. He was happy and giggling. We took turns holding him.

He would go back and forth between seeming okay and wailing at the top of his lungs. Whenever he would scream someone would run into the room, take him from our arms and try to get him to stop. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. Sometimes I was frustrated, sometimes I was thankful for the help. The meeting was not at all what I expected. My heart broke for Elias. I wondered if we had made the wrong decision as he seemed happier at HH then with us. More than anything I just wanted him to be happy and he seemed scared.Eventually I put him in the Moby Wrap and we found out almost right away how much he liked it.
He would still cry but with some bouncing and singing he would calm down. It was a battle. By this time we were the only family left at HH. Almaz talked to us for a while then we walked ourselves back to the Union.Back at the Union we found ourselves exhausted and overwhelmed. The baby fell asleep at 6:30pm right as planned. Unfortunately he didn’t stay asleep. We ordered dinner in the room as Elias was sleeping in the Moby. By time it got there Brian was snoring and my sister and I were looking at each other with looks that said, “What have we gotten ourselves in to?” Shawn came up that night and offered to check out his ears. It was then that we found out he had a double ear infection. After learning this we noticed that in the bouncy seats that the children spend a good deal of their time in, milk from the bottles, drool and tears will all flow right into their ears at that angle.
Luckily Emily took pity on me and graciously offered to stay the night and help me. Elias ended up waking up 5 times that night. Each time was a fight that ended with Mommy having to put on the Moby. Brian did so well with him and was almost always the first up. He would change him and feed him but that is as far as Elias would let him go. Whenever Daddy tried to put Elias to sleep all he wanted to do was play. As soon as I was up he would calm down and eventually fall asleep.

Ethiopia Days 1 and 2 (Friday and Saturday)

Saying Good Bye
A clear day over San Diego Somewhere along the way Day 1 turned into Day 2. We had a long layover in London. I indulged in a vanilla latte and some fresh fruit knowing it might be a while before I got either again. Once we got to our gate we spotted the other families we were traveling with. Thanks to blog profile pictures we quickly spotted Traci and Scott who were already chatting with Steve and Shawn. We were all tired but excited!! This leg of the journey went surprisingly quick for me. Actually the whole trip over went by way faster than I had imagined. We sat next to a really fun family who were moving to Ethiopia and had 3 young girls. They all really liked to talk to Brian and kept us entertained.

The plane taking us to Addis Ababa!

Almost there!!!!

Next thing you know the plane had landed and we were in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia!! Scott and Traci had been here a few times so they knew exactly which lines to get in. We quickly got our visas and then passed through immigration. One by one each of our 8 bags arrived safe and sound. As Brian was pulling them off I was praying that if anything got lost it wouldn’t be the bag with our stuff in it. As we walked through the exit doors I spotted Johannes, the AGCI family coordinator who was picking us up. I felt bad that the poor guy was up and waiting for our late plane at 3:30am. He greeted us and the first thing I asked was “When can we see our baby? We don’t have to wait until tomorrow do we?” Johannes laughed and said nothing. I don’t know if he understood my fast, excited and slightly delirious version of English. I asked for a picture and we waited for the other families.
We took an eventful trek down to the van where bags were piled high on top. Scott asked Johannes if he needed to borrow rope…he said no as if he had his own; however, he had no intention of using any. Steve held lookout from the side and Brian from the back. Shockingly in the 20 minute drive over bumpy roads we didn’t lose a single bag. As we pulled up to the Union Hotel I couldn’t believe that it was actually our turn. After 13 months of reading about traveling it was finally our turn! Amazing. We checked in and hiked the stairs to our room. The first thing I had Brian do was plug in the hot water heater (that ended up being an excellent decision) as we had piping hot water in the morning and for the rest of our stay. There really was nothing comparable to a hot shower during this trip (even if there was no shower curtain). Scott and Traci brought a shower curtain because that is what experienced Ethiopian travelers do, and since they had an amazing bathroom they let us borrow it. Unfortunately I ended up having to use it as a curtain so that the guys roofing across the street couldn’t watch me shower. I probably would have had to duck each morning in the shower otherwise.By this time it was 5am. Brian and I drifted off to sleep but it didn’t last. Two hours later we were wide awake - ready to see my sister, meet my brothers, and finally hold Elias!
I Can't Wait For This Reunion
Well my parents left early Saturday morning to pick up Alemu and Israel. We are so excited to have them back home in 2 weeks!!! According to Emily the boys were shy at first but warmed up to Mom and Dad very quickly. The most excruciating part of the wait was once the plane had landed and they had to go through customs. Emily said at that point Almeu was chanting "1, 2, 3, Mom and Dad" over and over again hoping they would finally appear...so cute!

Brothers #4 and #5
Alemu - age 10 (ish)
Israel - age 8 (ish)
We got to meet Almeu and Israel the morning of Feb 1st and we met Elias later that afternoon. Feb 1st will forever be a very special day for Brian and I. I think it was a good thing that we met the older boys first and were able to give them a little special attention before we were more consumed with a baby.
Alemu and Israel are truly wonderful boys. They are loving, affectionate and nurturing. They are well behaved and sweet tempered. They are curious and excited. Although I haven't been a mom long, I have learned that it is very easy to love people who love your child. I love Israel and Alemu all their own but seeing how much they love and dote over Elias deepened that love to a whole other level.Changing their nephew's diaper
