5 and 1/2 Hours

So we leave in 5 and 1/2 hours. We should probably be sleeping but we are going to be up for a while. Not out of necessity - just not tired. I wanted to share about all the stuff we are taking with us!! Thank you to all of you who sent donations or money to buy donations. Also, thank you to those of you who gave to AGCI specifically to cover extra baggage costs for people like us! We are taking 8 bags (1 is purposefully overweight and 7 which are hopefully right at 50 lbs). Our stuff takes up 1 bag and presents for my sister take up 1 bag the rest are DONATIONS! These are just some of the piles of donations.

Excited Energy

I definitely have some excited energy. I have that feeling of butterflies in the stomach and haven't had a very big appetite because of it. Last night Brian made Pasta ala Brian (yes it is as fancy as it sounds). I was supposed to be eating my appetizer and drinking my wine while he finished up. I could NOT sit still. I got up from the table 4 or 5 times in the course of a half hour. All the sudden I had a blast from the past. When we were younger we always listened to Patch the Pirate in the car. There we were, the Talcott family, in our chocolate brown Dodge Caravan bumping Patch the Pirate children's praise songs. We LOVED Patch the Pirate. Most of my memories of this time only include Emily and Chuckie although I am pretty sure the very young versions of Jake and Alex were exposed to Patch too. One of our favorites that we loved to sing along to was Wiggle Worm. As I was abnormally wiggly at dinner this song popped in my head. So, here you have it - Wiggle Worm.

2 Days, 3 Nights

Aaaaahhhhhhhh!!!! We are in the home stretch. 6am Friday when we pull out of the parking lot cannot possibly come soon enough! We are excited. Jumping out of our skin EXCITED!!

Everyone asks me if I'm nervous. I say, "no, not nervous. Just excited." Then I hear things like, "yeah, right." No REALLY - I'm NOT nervous. Just EXCITED. Ask me on the plane ride over...maybe then I will be nervous. Who knows? Maybe not.

I do have a worry. I must confess. For all of those who have been talking to me the past few weeks you are probably sick of hearing about this but I am worried Elias will be sick or will get sick. I know there is no point in worrying. I know there is nothing I can do about it if he is sick but try my best to get through it. Here's the deal. I feel confident in my ability to care for a baby. Especially a baby who by all accounts is happy as long as he is being held. Now my arms might fall off holding our 18 lb. chunkster all the time BUT if he just wants to be held and loved on then we've got this in the bag. Diapers, bottles, piece of cake. Plane ride home makes me a little scared but recently I have been going with the attitude we will do our best and if our best isn't good enough at least we will never ever see anyone on the flight ever again!

However, throw a sick baby into the mix and I will be hit hard with the fact that although he is ours, we don't know him. We don't know what makes him feel better when he is sick. He doesn't know us so we won't be any comfort to him. For some reason being sick goes beyond the physical for me - I guess the thought of him being sick and my fear that I won't know how to make him feel better hits the deeper issue that although his name is Besufikad Brian Gossett, he is a stranger to everything but our hearts. In our hearts we know him but we know nothing about the real physical baby. We don't know what makes him smile, giggle, cry - he is a stranger.

I want him to know I am his mom. I want to be able to pick MY son out of a crowd. I want to understand what makes Elias happy. I want to feel like his mom. It will come. I know it will. I also know it will take time... That said, how can you prepare your heart after waiting and dreaming for so long that on the day you meet the REAL LIVE BABY he will be a stranger?

2 days, 3 nights - WE'RE COMING ELIAS!!!!!!!!

I'm A Bad Mom Already??

I've never even met my son yet and I already did a "bad mom" thing. I am sure it won't be the last. I wrote a blog post today and in my excitement about having 2 new brothers I forgot it was my son's 6 month birthday. Good thing he has a Mimi who remembers him and reminded me. So... here are 6 things I love about Elias.

1)Your smile!
2) How you grow more and more beautiful/we grow more and more smitten each time we see a new picture.

3) How you make your Dad talk to himself. Well, really he is talking to you except you are all the way in Ethiopia so really he talks to himself. Each night (out loud) he says something like, "Good night, Elias. We love you buddy and we'll be there as soon as we can."

4) Your ability to evoke love - we hear your nannies love you very much.

5) Your happy personality - we hear you giggle and smile all the time

6) How you made your Auntie Em's day when you let her hold you without fussing for a 1/2 hour. She said you smiled and giggled the whole time. You even cuddled up to her and she loved it!

So, to quote your Dad, "We love you buddy and we'll be there as soon as we can!"

1 Week Left!!!

First off MY PARENTS PASSED COURT!!!!!!!! We are thrilled! There is a catch though. Their agency told them not to celebrate yet because some families are technically passing court but then they will have an outstanding requirement and until the requirement is met they can't get an embassy appointment or travel. SO...we have to wait until Wednesday when the decree will be issued to find out if the judge had everything he needed. There will definitely be an update on Wednesday as soon as we know along with pictures of my brothers (because I am confident our prayers were answered)!! They were also told to expect to travel the 17th which means they will be leaving a few days after we get home. Aaaahhh!!! This is so exciting!!

So what do you do in between the passing court phone call and boarding the plane??? I won't write out my entire to do list because it would take you an hour to read but here is a sampling:

1) Take the 5 different lists I already had and consolidate them into 1, 6 paged typed list :)

2) Delegate all the yucky stuff to Brian (not intentionally, it just so happens that all the yucky stuff involves his job) - getting Elias added to our insurance, filing out forms, getting his time off, filing out more forms, making sure we get paid, etc.

3) Roll the final slew of pennies from our coin drive a year ago... 4) Pick up What To Expect Babies 1st Year after it sat on the bookshelf for a year

5) Cook a bunch of casseroles and freeze them. Mostly just because I've lost my mind.

6) Plan at least one date!

7) Collect DONATIONS

8) Make the baby's 1st Dr.'s appointment - Friday the 13th!

9) Go to 10 different stores 10 different times to buy things we "need." This includes feeling the need to use all the $5 off Similac coupons I have been collecting for the last 4 months. Woah this stuff is expensive - especially when you buy 2 months supply in 2 days "just so we have it." Brian likes to laugh at me about this one. You would think I would be preparing to recover for a C-section the way I am stocking up like we are never going to be able to run an errand EVER again.

10) Make piles, pack, unpack, make new piles, repeat.

11) Get the car serviced - again note the mindset of never being able to run an errand again. This is not a road trip yet I wanted my tires worked on, my brakes fixed, an oil change and a tune up before we left. Really, I'm losing my mind.

12) Plan a "sprinkle" for my Mom because I don't want to miss it! A sprinkle is a shower for kids after #1. I will post pictures on Monday :)

13) Practice with the Moby wrap. I think it will come in handy with our 18 lb. hunk of love. Yes, a 6 month old who weighs at least 18 lbs. (he was last weighed 3 weeks ago so I am thinking it might be closer to 19 lbs.) Woah!

14) Wash bottles. Sterilize nipples, teethers, pacifers, etc.15) Baby laundry!!!!I wanted to document all of our firsts! I had Brian take a picture of the first load of baby laundry. I was too chicken to ask the cashier at Target if I could take a picture of my first purchases of formula and diapers. Maybe that is best. That might be a little bit overboard. Hopefully I won't look back and mark that down as a life long regret. :)

16) Pack all of the baby's clothes, blankets, and wipes into the smaller duffle bag which will be my carry on. We think between our carry-ons and personal item carry-ons we will only use 1 of our 4 bags for our family of THREE and can use the other 3 bags for donations.

17) Finish this stage of the adoption paperwork. Yes, there is more. And no it will not be done once we get home. Actually we will be doing adoption paperwork for the next 18 years. Ugh!

18) Rearrange my entire house. We have already reorganized and cleaned out every cupboard and drawer in our kitchen. The bathroom and closets are next! Again, losing my mind.

19) Keep doing crazy things to stay super busy so the next WEEK flies by!

20) Whew!

Please Pray!

My parent's second court date is right around the corner. Their case will be at court on the 22nd (Wednesday night for us). Please cover this case in your prayers!! We are all ready for the boys to legally be part of our family.

The fun part about my sister living at the transition house with them is we get to hear lots of stories about the boys and sometimes even talk to them. I haven't had the chance to talk to them but my parents have.

Here are a few of my newest favorite stories about "A" (age 10) and "I" (age 8).

The other day "A" said to Emily, "I wish Mom and Dad would be here soon." How sweet! It just makes me want to cry though. Emily told him that we were all doing everything we could and they would be here soon.

In the latest e-mail my Mom received "A" wrote, "I want you to come soon." And "I" wrote, "I love you and can't wait to see you again." I guess the boys loved doing this because they typed the messages themselves.

"A" told Emily he wanted to change his name when he came to America. Emily told him Mom and Dad would let him pick a new name if that is what he wanted. "A" proudly announced that he already knew his new name. When Emily asked what name he wanted he said "Peter. Like Peter Parker." He then went and changed his name on the white board from "A" to "Peter A." Can you tell these boys LOVE Spiderman??

Brian and I can't wait to meet them and we would LOVE it if we could tell them Mom and Dad were coming REALLY soon!!

Calling All Angels (UPDATED)

***We have received word that AGCI has secured incoming shipments of formula. They are still looking for donations of formula, although it is not such a crisis as it has been for the past couple of months. In addition, they are now asking for donations of DIAPERS AND WIPES.***

We have exact travel dates and tickets!! We will be leaving San Diego bright and early on January 30th!! We will get to meet Elias a day earlier than we thought on Sunday, February 1st!!! We will be returning Monday, February 9th at 10:26pm, United Airlines flight #0651. Friends and family are invited to greet the THREE of us at the airport - we would love to see you there!

Side note: We are very thankful that God has provided AMAZING airfare...in fact the best prices seen by our travel agent in the past decade!!! This means we have 100% of what we need for travel expenses!!!! The only downside is we will be cutting our connecting flight home from Chicago to San Diego very short...so if you are planning on meeting us at the airport you may want to touch base with our family first to make sure we made it ok.

DONATIONS NEEDED!
We have recently been made aware of the formula shortage in Ethiopia because the birr (Ethiopian currency) has lost value due to the downturn in the Ethiopian economy. Because of this trading with the Middle East, the normal source of formula, has been hampered. This has resulted in a shortage of formula in the country and more specifically, dear to our hearts, the orphanages. If you want to purchase powdered formula (no liquid!), specifically up to about 12 months of age, you can give it to me (Autumn). If you are further away, email me at autumn_gossett at yahoo dot com and I can give you my address. Since this crisis is so severe we will not be using up space on other donated items and will be using every extra pound specifically to take formula. We are especially grateful to those who donate since our son is currently living off of the donations of those before us. HH will make sure they have what they need and then they will share with other orphanages in the area. We will be bringing any and all formula we receive prior to our departure, although we ask you get it to us as soon as possible for packing purposes.

An Introduction Video

TRAVEL PLANS!!!!

We will be arriving in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia February 1st and meeting Elias on Monday, February 2nd!!! We are thrilled beyond words! We don't have flights yet but we imagine we will be flying out January 31st (a mere 3 weeks from Saturday!) and returning approximately a week after the 2nd.

We received an update on Elias. He is 5 and 1/2 months old and 18lbs.

Here is what was said about him:

"Besufikad loves to be held and near someone all the time. [Brian and I have already agreed this will be absolutely no problem at all!] So there should be no problem picking him up and holding him when you first meet him. He can be fussy when he is put down or not with an adult, so do not be worried, but overall he is a pretty content baby. And of course he is adorable, and is starting to understand."

We can't wait to snuggle with this precious little boy!

**Congratulations to all my buddies who got referrals!!! The wait gets harder but the good news that ends the wait is the greatest of all!

Thank You God

Those were the words I mumbled through the tears when I heard the words

"You Passed Court!!!"

We are in awe at God's graciousness in giving us this precious little boy. Thank you all for your prayers. We owe all of this miracle to the Lord and are so grateful for the petitioning done on our behalf.

We do not have specific travel dates yet. We should hear sometime this week but we are anticipating the beginning of February.

Without further ado, I give you, OUR SON,

Elias Besufikad Gossett
We couldn't release his full name before but when I asked about sharing pictures and info I was reassured that he is 100% ours. Besufikad means the will of God and it will always be a special name to us because it was given to our son by a very special lady.

"Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen." Ephesians 3:20-21
